Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB)

CIHEAM-IAMB is the Italian Institute of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), an intergovernmental organisation founded under the aegis of the OECD and the European Council in 1962. Post-graduate training, applied scientific and cooperative research, networking, and international cooperation initiatives are the Centre’s main activities, which are essentially related to the following fields: land and water resources management; integrated pest management of fruit crops; organic farming; and sustainable agriculture and rural development, all with specific focus on the Mediterranean.

Organic agriculture has been a specific area of interest and action at CIHEAM-IAMB since 1997. Member of IFOAM, the IFOAM EU Group and ISOFAR, CIHEAM-IAMB also coordinates the activities of MOAN - Mediterranean Organic Agriculture Network. The Network, launched in 1999, currently gathers 22 Euro-Mediterranean countries represented by decision-makers of the Ministries of Agriculture dealing with organic agriculture.

In the Mediterrranean region, for the development of organic agriculture, MOAN essentially aims at:

• creating working partnerships;
• encouraging exchange and cooperation between public and private stakeholders;
• dissemination of information about organic agriculture’s rationale and impacts.

MOAN organises thematic annual meetings in the network's member countries, country-specific workshops and international conferences; supports the creation of national sub-networks; produces scientific works and periodical reports on organic agriculture in the region; and manages a website with a special section with country profiles and events.
